Three teams remain in the top five list from early in June. The two newcomers look like they are seriously making a run for the post-season. If these teams remain in the top five, the playoffs will look a lot different this year then the previous few years. Only one team on this list was in the playoffs last year. Things can change by the end of the season, but I think at least four out of the five on here are locks for the playoffs. 3. San Diego Padres: The Padres are the only team in the list to remain in the same exact spot since the beginning of June. The Surprising Padres have remained at the top of their division. Everyone expected them to fall apart by now, but they are still up there with the best winning percentage in the National League. The Dodgers were expected to run away with the NL West, but they have been up and down all year and are currently in third place behind another surprising team, the Giants and the Padres. The NL West is by far the toughest division in the National League. The top four teams all have a win percentage of over .500. The Padres continue to hold them off, but how? The answer is pitching. The Padres have the lowest team ERA in baseball with a 2.82 ERA. With pitching like that, the Padres just have to score around three runs a game to win. If it wasn’t for the Padres dominate pitching, the Padres would probably be one of the worst teams in baseball because not one of their everyday hitters is hitting over .300. The Padres need to make a move for one or more big bats to make them a more threatening team. As of now, if the team remains the same, I do not see them making it to the World Series and if they miraculously do somehow a team like the Yankees or Rays would probably sweep them.

Adrian Gonzalez's low batting average thus far.

It is no secret that Adrian Gonzalez is the most feared hitter on the San Diego Padres. On a team full of youth, Gonzalez is a slugger who is still in his 20’s. Nearing 100 RBI’s the past three seasons, Gonzalez looks as if he will keep up with that pace this season. But a hole in his game, which haunts other sluggers such as Ryan Howard is the idea of average. After clinching a .304 batting average in 2006, it has gone downhill for Gonzalez. In 2009, it dipped down to .277, which is not terrible at all for someone with the power hitting that Gonzalez possesses.

However, 2010 has not been kind to Gonzalez in terms of batting average. His average so far is at .254, which would be exceptionally lower than it has been in years if the season were to end today. Yes, it is still very early in the season. But, Gonzalez may need to make adjustments at the plate to keep that average up. The Padres have a nice young group, but they will come and go with Gonzalez. And if Gonzalez is only getting one hit every four at-bats, Gonzalez may be thinking of ways to improve his swing as he watches the playoffs on television.

During spring training, Padres manager Bud Black went out of his way to keep his options open. He hinted, strongly at times, that 22-year-old pitching prospect Mat Latos could open the season at Triple-A Portland.

After all, Latos had struggled over his final five starts of 2009 (0-4, 7.71 ERA) before being shut down early to protect his valued right arm from overwork and allow the pitcher to work with Darren Balsley on some delivery adjustments.

“You never know with those things if they are going to stick over the winter,” Black said of the adjustments Latos and Balsley worked on last September.

They did.

In fact, Latos worked over the winter to strengthen the modifications suggested by Balsley. And during the exhibition season, Latos allowed only three runs on 12 hits over 17 innings while striking out 14.

Yes, it was one of the youngest clubs in the major leagues, with fully 19 players qualified as rookies.
Tony Gwynn Jr. homered and Kevin Kouzmanoff singled in the go-ahead run as the San Diego Padres beat Los Angeles 3-1 on Tuesday night, keeping the Dodgers from clinching their second straight NL West title.
The Dodgers have lost three straight since securing a playoff spot on Saturday night. Colorado didn't do the Dodgers any favors, beating Milwaukee 7-5 in 11 innings.

Tuesday's results forced the Dodgers to keep on ice the champagne they'd lugged with them from Pittsburgh, where they lost three of four to the Pirates, the NL's second-worst team.

Heath Bell, who turned 32 on Tuesday, pitched a perfect ninth for his NL-best 41st save in 47 chances, striking out Manny Ramirez, Matt Kemp and James Loney.

The fifth one was the charm for Chase Headley and the Padres on Monday night at PNC Park. The Padres third baseman had his first career five-hit night and finished a triple shy of a cycle, but it was the fifth and final hit, an 11th-inning double against reliever Jeff Karstens, that led to an 11-6 win and allowed San Diego to head to Colorado having taken three out of four from Pittsburgh.

"He had big hits," an appreciative manager Bud Black said. "I liked the fact he was getting the ball down the right-field line, getting the head out. He showed straightaway power as well and got the ball down the left-field line for a double, too. That's hitting, when you go line-to-line with a homer to straightaway center. That tells me he's seeing the ball. He's hitting it where it's pitched."

There was a time to gloat Sunday, a time to revel in the accomplishment of running through their National League West division brethren in a nine-game stretch with results that were certainly more than just admirable.
David Eckstein wanted none of it, and the Padres' second baseman was likely willing to get on a clubhouse chair and share with his teammates, many fresh-faced, 20-something types short on experience, the very same message.

"We have to keep pushing. ... We're not done yet," said Eckstein, reciting the rest of the regular season schedule that is still fraught with games against the Dodgers, Giants and Rockies, the same teams the Padres just rolled through.

It took five months, 133 games and a bevy of roster changes -- remember Duaner Sanchez? -- but the Padres secured their first winning month of the year Monday by winning yet another game that was essentially defined by their defense.
Sure, starting pitcher Tim Stauffer worked past five innings for the first time in a month, allowing one run in 6 2/3 innings en route to a 3-1 Padres win over the Nationals in front of a crowd of 19,867 at PETCO Park.

And it probably didn't hurt that the Padres scored twice in the first inning before Livan Hernandez, the Nationals starting pitcher, began pitching like it was 2000 all over again, the year he won 17 games for the Giants.
